The Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was at the height of its activities over the past year, and Marieke Wierda and a consultant provided specialized trainings on public hearings; assistance in developing an approach to community-based reconciliation; advice on a reparations program; and a meeting on final report writing with senior staff members from truth commissions in Ghana, Peru, South Africa, and Timor-Leste.
The ICTJ also sought to stimulate civil society engagement with the TRC and continued to give independent advice to both the Commission and the Special Court for Sierra Leone to promote a constructive and complementary interrelationship. The ICTJ worked with the Special Court to establish a domestic monitoring program and organize seminars for Court judges at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). The Center also helped organize a workshop on ICC implementation and engaged organizations and individuals to advise on transitional justice issues in Liberia.
