ICTJ Activity in South Africa

Background On This Country

ICTJ staff provided assistance to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) as it worked to complete its final report and recommendations, the most important of which involved reparations and possible criminal proceedings against accused perpetrators. In June 2002, the ICTJ worked with two local NGOs-the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) and the Legal Resources Centre-to sponsor a workshop in Johannesburg exploring strategies to pursue reparations and prosecutions in the post-TRC context. The Center is now working with CSVR and Khulumani, a victims' rights organization, to help record the history of victim organizing in South Africa. This collaboration will focus on how the lessons learned and challenges faced by Khulumani in relation to the truth commission process, as well as how the struggles for justice and reparations in the wider transitional context in South Africa, can help inform victim organizing efforts in other contexts.
