Overview

The ICTJ has been involved in transitional justice initiatives in several Latin American countries, including Guatemala and Peru, and also works on a project in the United States, relating to the unresolved legacy of abuse in Greensboro, North Carolina.

In Panama and Peru, the ICTJ has advised the truth commissions that were established in 2001. ICTJ staff have paid visits to both countries to meet with commissioners, human rights organizations, and government officials. In Argentina, the Center has advised a local human rights organization on resisting demands for documentation from the armed forces. In Guatemala, the ICTJ is assisting the national prosecuting authorities in developing their technical capacities in investigating and prosecuting massive crimes. The Center's staff members traveled to Nicaragua in August 2002 to assist in an initial inquiry that examined the interest in and utility of applying transitional justice mechanisms—particularly a truth commission—in that country. In Mexico, the ICTJ is working with NGOs to consider a comprehensive approach to confronting past human rights abuses, including working with a special prosecutor for human rights. In the United States, the Center is advising a new project born out of the context and aftermath of the 1979 Greensboro Massacre.
