By adding to its existing programs a focused transitional justice program in the Middle East and North Africa, the ICTJ seeks to facilitate and encourage efforts to end the culture of impunity and contribute to democratic change in the region.
Leveraging the legal expertise and comparative experience of its staff and outside experts, the program provides technical assistance, analysis, and advice to governments and civil society actors in the region.
Working with local partners, the program conducts in-country and regional training programs aimed at formulating transitional justice strategies in anticipation of further democratic transition.
The program also works closely with local human rights organizations; reaches out to key policymakers to provide information on transitional justice issues; produces analytical and descriptive transitional justice publications; and builds and disseminates its Arabic collection of transitional justice documents to lay the groundwork for ongoing efforts to come to terms with past abuses.
